Sebum
Sebum is an oily substance produced in your sebaceous glands. This substance is made up of a number of lipids including:
- Glycerides
- Free fatty acids
- Wax esters
- Squalene
- Cholesterol esters
- Cholesterol.
You know that natural oil your body has? That's it, well part of it! Sebum is made to coat, moisturise and protect our skin. It also helps maintain flexibility in the skin and can act as a barrier to prevent unwatered matter from harming it. Although sebum production is completely normal and healthy, too much or too little can cause problems.
