What is a safety razor?
Simply put, it’s an old school shaving tool made of metal featuring a quality removable blade. It’s called a safety razor as it includes a bar to keep the blade from directly hitting the skin. Unlike most disposable razors, a safety razor only has one blade which is exposed on both sides providing for longer lasting blades and shaves.
Why can’t I just buy a razor at the shops?
You could, however you are then contributing to the world's waste problem. Did you know currently 2 billion razors go to the landfill each year in the USA alone? Our razors are 100% sustainable, long lasting, carefully designed and look great on your bathroom shelf.
What is the razor made of?
Made to last with high grade zinc alloy & bronze metal, our BPA free razor is beautifully coated to ensure a smooth glide along the skin for a close, long lasting shave.
Can I travel with my safety razor?
Yes, however your safety razor blades must be in checked luggage. Unfortunately due to the ability to remove the blade from the shell with ease means that they are not allowed in carry on luggage. You are able to take your razor on the flight with no blades & find blades at your destination. We will have another solution soon so stay tuned!

Shaving
How do I shave with the Ritology Smooth Operator Razor?
Shave at the end of a warm shower or bath when your skin and hair are soft. Apply 4-6 pumps of shave oil or creamy soap and spread over the area to be shaved. With the razor angled to about 30 degrees, begin to shave, making sure to apply NO extra pressure. The razor’s weight is all that is needed. For best results, start with light, short strokes and glide razor gently in a controlled manner over the
How long do the blades last / When do I change the blade?
The frequency of changing your blade depends on how often you shave, but a simple guideline is to change your blade after 5-10 uses. If you notice any dragging or dullness, it's time for a change. Swap out for a fresh blade! Each refill pack contains 10 blades. After every shave, always rinse and dry your razor of any remaining oil or water, and store in a dry and safe location.
How many shaves will I get with a single blade?
Everyone’s shaving needs are different and this will very much depend on how often you shave, where you are shaving, the coarseness of your hair and much more. You will notice a smoother result if you change the blade out regularly, we usually say once a week for a regular shaver or every 5-10 shaves. Our subscription provides for this exactly to ensure the smoothest results.
Can men use Ritology razors too?
They certainly can. But beware, once they use your razor once, they’ll never go back to their old one. You should probably get them onto a plan before it’s too late!
I have too many blades?
Reduce the delivery frequency in your account settings.
How do I care for my razor?
Clean out the hair after shaving simply using running water, wipe off residue and store dry when possible. Travel with the razor stored safely in the tin travel case. Be sure to wash soap off hands when shaving. Ensure the razor is not dropped on hard tiles or the bathroom floor as it may result in unrepairable damage.
How do I dispose of the blades?
Take your used blades to a metal scraps recycling location near you. We recommend storing them in a used tin container until you have enough to take to the recycling centre in bulk.
Are the handles truly sustainable?
The entire product is sustainable down to the packaging!
Is shaving with a Safety Razor Safe?
100%. It’s not called a ‘Safety’ razor for no reason. It includes a bar that ensures the blade doesn’t directly contact the skin. In saying that, the technique is different from that of disposable razors so it can take some practice but once you have the technique down pat it’s faster, smoother and better all around.
Will I cut myself?
Any and all razors can cause nicks if they aren’t used correctly or your blades are dull. Ensure to review our shave instructions prior to use and you should be fine. To summarise, slow down, take shorter strokes with NO downward pressure and control the shave. The razor is weighted perfectly to gently glide across the skin.
What’s the difference between shaving with a Safety Razor and my usual disposable cartridge razor?
When shaving with a safety razor, there are some technique tips to bear in mind:
- Keep the angle of the blade at about 30 degrees relative to your skin. As it doesn’t have a pivoting head, simply control the angle of the blade.
- Keep the strokes short and smooth, with a rinse in-between to prevent too much build up on the blade.
- Do not apply any downward pressure. The razor is weighted to allow the perfect glide against your skin on its own.
- We highly recommend a exfoliation prior to shaving along with a quality shaving oil or crème to act as a barrier while shaving. Don’t forget to hydrate your skin afterwards for the perfect finish!
How often do I need to change the blade?
The answer to this question depends on a few things: the quality of the blade, how often you shave, the coarseness of your hair. We do suggest changing your blade every 5-10 days for the average user, however if you do not shave often and have less hair every 2-3 weeks works just fine. It’s really a personal thing. The razor will work best with a sharp blade. You will know it’s time for a new blade if you feel the razor tugging while you shave.
Does a Safety Razor take longer to shave?
I must admit, when starting out it did take me a few minutes longer as I was learning the technique. We do recommend that you slow down and enjoy the process. After a few shaves you will feel like a seasoned pro! Not only is it fast, but it will offer far less irritation and therefore healthier and smoother legs!
Do I need a shaving oil, foam or crème?
This is a personal choice. We do personally suggest a good quality shaving oil or creme! One of the best parts of a safety razor is the customisations options available to ensure the best shave for YOU. Every “body” is different and therefore what is perfect for one, isn’t for the other. Our advice is to give shaving foam with an old school bristle brush a try, but be warned, shaving may become your new “me” time.
Do females use shaving brushes?
There’s a reason barbers all use their shaving brushes. Brushes help to stand the hair up on your legs allowing the blade to cut across more cleanly and evenly. As a result, irritation is reduced meaning less bumps and burns! All the things us ladies DO NOT want! If you are fine without, continue on, but if you are prone to irritation we would highly suggest giving it a go.
Can you use this razor on the bikini line or underarms region?
Of course! A lesson here is to keep the skin taut using one hand and use the “3-way method”. Firstly, shave with the grain, so in the direction the hair is growing. Then across the grain, horizontally across the direction the hair is growing and lastly, against the grain, so in the opposite direction the hair is growing. If you have really sensitive skin, just leave it with the first two steps.
How do I change the Blade?
- Unscrew the razor head.
- Unwrap the blade from the paper holding onto it by the short sides. Be careful as the long sides are sharp.
- Place the blade on either side of the razor head and simply screw the head back together.
