Oatmeal Bath

When you have itchy skin, you cannot go wrong with an oatmeal bath! Here's why..

There is nothing worse than being unbearably itchy thanks to a specific skin condition. Namely, do any of the below sound familiar?

  • chicken pox
  • dry skin
  • dermatitis
  • Eczema
  • Hives
  • Insect bites
  • Psoriasis
  • Shingles
  • Sunburn

Whatever you do, don’t scratch! An oatmeal bath can soothe and offer just the relief you need. Colloidal oatmeal isn’t exactly the same oatmeal you have for breakfast. It can however be bought over the counter or simply made at home. It provides relief by forming a protective barrier helping your skin to retain moisture and ease inflammation.

To make your own, start with uncooked whole oats which can usually be found at your local grocery shop. Using a food processor, grind the oats into a fine powder.  Add some of the ground oats to a glass of water and mix. The water should turn milky white.

To prepare your oat bath, simply:

  1. Draw lukewarm water, not too hot.
  2. Add 1 cup of your homemade oatmeal mixture under running water as the tub fills.
  3. Soak and relax in the bath for at least 10 minutes.
  4. After the bath, gently pat yourself dry, careful not to scrub and apply a non irritant moisturiser such as shea butter.

Be cautious not to soak for too long as you may dry out your skin further.
