7 Worst Foods for Skin

It doesn't matter how perfect your skin care routine is, your body cannot outrun a bad diet. Good skin starts from within. If you've seen our recent blog, foods packed with healthy fats, collagen and antioxidants can do wonders when it comes to youthful radian skin. There are foods however that you may be ingesting that are hindering your skins ability to shine! Think dairy, sugars, processed foods and alcohol.

Although the research isn't necessarily clear on the topic, there does seem to be an established link between acne and certain foods. For example, diets rich in refined carbohydrates such as cereals, pastas, breads, etc have been noted to led to acne.
If you're wanting to do your part to keep your skin glowing and youthful, here's 7 foods to watch out for:

1. Processed Meat

Cured and processed meats include pepperoni, bacon, sausages and chorizo. They are high in nitrates which can cause inflammation in the skin, and in turn speed up the signs of aging. Further, these meats are incredibly high in sodium which can dry out the skin and slow down collagen production.

2.  High GI Foods

High glycemic index foods include our favourites, white bread, white pasta and potatoes. Don't get me wrong, I'm still and will always be a potato lover. The GI content however can cause acne breakouts, and are believed to contribute to premature aging. You don't need to give up on your bread, simply stick to whole grain options rather than processed flours.

3. Dairy

It's believed there may be a correlation between milk consumption and acne, especially in teenagers. Although there's no proof that dairy will cause acne, there are studies to show that some people may have an intolerance which can cause a number of complications including the skin. We do know that cow's milk elevates insulin levels which may increase cortisol levels and this can interfere with our sebum production. With cows milk being dairy, this may then include all dairy products!

4. Alcohol

If you've been around here for a while, you would know I'm here for my Friday night shiraz. Although oozing with antioxidants, the alcohol (and all alcohol) can actually speed up the aging process. Alcohol is a diuretic which means it draws liquid from the body which can lead to dry skin and dehydration. It's taking away the plumpness and moisture from our skin making wrinkles more pronounced. Fortunately moderate or occasional drinking shouldn't cause any issues!

5. Fast food

This shouldn't really come as a surprise. Acne is undoubtedly associated with diets rich in calories, saturated fats and refined carbohydrates. With many fast food restaurants catering to exactly that, fast food burgers and fries will likely not assist your road to clear glowing skin.

6. Sodas

Sodas are high in sugar and phosphates. Both of which can damage collagen supply and lead to early aging.

7. Sugar

You knew this one was coming so don't act so surprised. There's nothing wrong with a little indulgence here and there, but foods loaded with sugar, like all high glycemic foods will raise your blood sugar levels very quickly. This leads to inflammation and triggers glycation which can affect collagen product, and you got it.... make your skin age a little bit faster.
